Pastoral Services
The Pastoral Services Committee coordinates already existing
or developing organizations. If youre interested in one of the
following activities, please contact Joyce
Riley at 840-1796.
Ladies of St. James
This club is open to all St. James and St. Thomas ladies including non-Catholic spouses of parishioners. They meet not only for fun and fellowship but also to raise money for needed projects within the parish and in the community at large. Past fundraisers have included frozen food fairs, bake sales, raffles, annual rummage sale and sale of cookbooks. The club has been involved with March of Dimes Walk-a-thon, Habitat for Humanity, Race for the Cure and S.A.F.E., a shelter for battered women.
Adoration
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held during a 24-hour period, from 6pm Sunday evening to 6pm Monday evening, with the special intent of praying for an increase in vocations. The commitment is just one hour per week or you may share this commitment with a prayer partner and alternate weeks. Adoration is usually not held during major holidays. Parishioners who participate find this ministry to be one of the most rewarding and sacred hours of their week.
This Catholic men’s fraternal organization is based on principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Meetings are help the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7pm in the Knights building adjacent to the gym. The KCs’ have a monthly prayer breakfast, help the elderly in the community, hold an annual weekend retreat, raise funds by sponsoring breakfasts or take-out lunches to support the diocesan Seminarian Fund and help other groups like the Children’s Mansion, Habitat for Humanity and Sav-A-Life. An annual Tootsie Roll Drive is sponsored by the Knights and has collected over $100,000 for the McDougal Center, a learning facility for children with special needs.
Prayer Group
This group meets on the first Monday of each month. Contact Joan Aguirre at 842-5642 for more info. The group warmly welcomes you to join them whenever you can for fellowship, praise and worship of Christ’s love and work in each of us.
Prayer Circle
This is a prayer phone chain and e-mail chain that calls on parishioners to pray for those who have a special need or intention. This can be done from your home or office.
Guardian Angels
This is a one-on-one ministry that matches a parish ‘angel’ with a homebound parishioner. Responsibilities vary, but may include sending birthday cards, making regular home visits, transporting to appointments and providing support. This is a great ministry for young adults!
Mothers’ Rosary
This group meets at 11:40a the first Friday of each month at the Church before daily Mass. Volunteers are needed to lead and recite the rosary on a rotating basis.
Outreach to Inactive Catholics
This ministry is in its developmental stage. Please contact the church office at 842-4881 if you’re interested in volunteering.
Compassionate Friends
These members are on-call to be with patients and caregivers who face hospital stays or who are struggling with long-term illnesses. Volunteers sit with patient or caregiver for a period of 2-3 hours.
Rachel’s Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Weekend retreats offer a supportive, confidential and non-judgmental environment where women and men can express, release, and reconcile painful post-abortive emotions to begin the process of healing.
RV can help you find your inner voice and experience God’s love and compassion at a profound level. It creates a place where men and women can share, often for the first time, their deepest feelings about abortion. RV weekend retreats are held in the area one to two times per year. Financial assistance is available.
Volunteers are needed to provide snacks for the retreat and pray for participants, their families and mediators.
